Atorvastatin belongs to a family of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or ‘statins. Atorvastatin lowers low-density lipoprotein or LDL (considered bad cholesterol) and triglycerides in the blood while increasing high-density lipoprotein or HDL (considered good cholesterol) levels. High levels of LDL can result in stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors. This drug is primarily used for the treatment of Dyslipidemia and the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Certain other drugs can interact with Atorvastatin and increase the risk of serious muscle problems. So it is necessary to consult your doctor about the following drugs such as birth control pills, cimetidine, conivaptan, imatinib, isoniazid, dalfopristin, quinupristin, rifampin, telithromycin, antidepressants, heart or blood pressure medicines, diltiazem, gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, HIV medicine, spironolactone, rosuvastatin, lovastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin.
