The active ingredient of the medicine is Spironolactone, which is categorized under the drug class aldosterone antagonists. Aldosterone is known to balance salts and fluids in the body. Spironolactone increases sodium excreted in the urine in those found to accumulate the fluid in the tissues or the abdominal cavity. The drug acts by removing excess fluid and by lowering blood pressure. It works against the effects of aldosterone. It improves the effectiveness of other medicines used to lower blood pressure. It should be given to children only under the guidance of a doctor.
Do not take Aldactone 100 mg if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. Spironolactone may impact your thinking capability and reflexes. Take extra care while driving or other such activities that require a high level of mental awareness and alertness. Do not exert more or become dehydrated while exercising and hot weather. Certain drugs should be avoided if the doctor prescribes you Aldactone 100 mg to avoid possible drug interactions. These drugs include other blood pressure medicines, diuretics, medicines used to prevent blood clots, cholestyramine, ammonium chloride, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), anaesthetics etc.
Take Aldactone 100 mg strictly as per your doctor’s advice. Avoid making any dosage adjustment unless your doctor advises you to do so. Also, do not take this medication after the prescribed period is over. Take it as soon as possible if it is not too late, but if it is less than 6 hrs left for your next dose, skip the dose and take your next dose at the correct time. Do not double up the dose to compensate for the missed one. Also, do not take potassium supplements or other diuretics while taking Spironolactone. Also, avoid salt substitutes or low sodium milk products that contain potassium. These products can shoot up your potassium levels while taking this medicine.
