Description
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Telmisartan is used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure; it was launched in 1999. In older people, i.e., people 55 years or above, this drug is beneficial in decreasing the chance of heart attack, stroke, or death.
Telmisartan controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. It is a sign of hypertension when your blood pressure stays higher than is needed, even when you are calm or relaxed. Normal blood pressure at rest is 80/120 mm Hg. Your blood pressure may decrease during the first 2 weeks of your treatment, but it may take 4 weeks for you to notice the full benefits of Telmisartan.
The drug contains Telmisartan which belongs to a group of medicines called Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. This drug acts by reducing the effect of Angiotensin (narrowing of blood vessels). Telmisartan causes vasodilation and relaxes the blood vessels to smoothen the blood flow.
Consult a doctor if you do not feel well while taking Telmisartan. Some commonly reported side effects of Telma 20 mg are difficulty in breathing and swallowing, diarrhea, congestion, fainting and dizziness, flu-like symptoms, infections of the air passages, rash or redness or itchiness of the skin, stomach pain or discomfort, pins and needles, impotence, liver problems, aching muscles, or aching joints, etc.
These are the most common symptoms, but you may find many other discomforting signs. In such cases, you must go for immediate medical help. Do not get alarmed by the list. You may/may not experience all of them.
Always take the dose as prescribed by the physician. It is very important to consume medicine timely. The common dosage for high blood pressure is one Telma 20 mg tablet once daily.
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. You can take the drug with or without food. Take the tablet exactly as the doctor prescribes, and do not increase or decrease the drug dose without a doctor’s consent. Take Telmisartan tablets at about the same time each day, be it at any time of the day. Doing this will help you remember the time of the drug and will also help you to get the best results.
Take the tablet every day until your doctor tells you to stop. Telmisartan helps you lessen or control the symptoms of your high BP, but it might not cure it completely. So, you must take it every day, even if you feel well.
